A tearaway fast-bowler is a rare breed in the modern era, and if a bowler can bowl at mid 150kmph, and that too with a non-taxing action. Riley Meredith is Australia’s upcoming express right-arm quick, who burst onto the scene through the BBL.
Meredith’s express pace and impeccable performances at the domestic level got him the T20 debut for Hobart Hurricanes in the 2017-18 BBL season, where he played the semi-final and final, sharing the ball with Jofra Archer. Later that year, he snapped 27 wickets in his eight Sheffield Shield games and also took 16 wickets in the BBL 8.
The pacer was peaking in the ninth edition of the BBL as well and scalped 10 wickets in the tournament, but got injured after playing six games. However, the pacer made a solid comeback in the BBL 10, where he impressed various veterans of the game with his pace and execution during all phases of the game. In the 2020-21 season, he picked 16 wickets and a healthy economy of 7.83.
Meredith’s maiden national call-up came in September 2020, when Australia toured England for the limited-overs series but didn’t get the chance to make his international debut. Post his success in the BBL, Meredith was again called for the national duties for the Trans-Tasman series against New Zealand in February 2021. Meredith took four wickets in three games, including the wicket of Kane Williamson twice.
In February 2021, Punjab Kings bought Meredith for INR 8 crore in the mini-auction ahead of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League.
In February 2022, he was picked up by the Mumbai Indians at the IPL auction for the 2022 season, adding raw pace to their bowling group. A couple of months later, in April 2022, Meredith was signed by the London Spirit for The Hundred, but an untimely injury ruled him out of the tournament, and he was replaced before making an appearance.
Meredith returned to the IPL in 2023 when the Mumbai Indians brought him in as a replacement for the injured Jhye Richardson. While opportunities at the IPL level remained competitive, his role in Australian domestic cricket stayed significant. He went unsold at the IPL 2026 auction, but remains an important part of the Hobart Hurricanes setup, where his express pace and aggression continue to be key weapons heading into the Big Bash League 2025–26 season.
