Kumar Kushagra is one of the most exciting young wicketkeeper-batters emerging from India’s domestic circuit, blending long-format temperament with white-ball explosiveness. Representing Jharkhand and currently part of the Gujarat Titans setup in the IPL, Kushagra has built a reputation for playing both marathon innings and high-impact cameos.

Kumar Kishagra’s Early Life & Background

Born in Bokaro, Jharkhand, Kumar Kushagra’s cricketing journey is rooted in discipline and an unconventional learning environment. His father, a GST officer, played a crucial role in shaping his early game—not through professional coaching, but by studying and teaching from cricket literature, including Bob Woolmer’s The Art and Science of Cricket.

Starting his training at the age of six, Kushagra followed a strict routine. Initially a pure batter, he later took up wicketkeeping, drawing inspiration from Jharkhand’s iconic figure, MS Dhoni.

Kumar Kushagra’s Domestic Career

Kushagra’s rise through the ranks has been marked by record-breaking performances and consistency across formats.

His first major breakthrough came in the 2019 Vinoo Mankad Trophy, where he finished as the leading run-scorer with 535 runs. This performance earned him a place in India’s squad for the 2020 Under-19 World Cup.

Making his Ranji Trophy debut for Jharkhand against Delhi in February 2022, he quickly entered the record books in his very first season. In a preliminary quarter-final against Nagaland, Kushagra produced a monumental innings of 266 off 269 balls, becoming the youngest batter in First-Class history to score 250-plus runs, surpassing a decades-old record held by Javed Miandad.

Far from being a one-off performance, he has continued to dominate in red-ball cricket, underlining his consistency with another double century (234) against Baroda in 2025.

Kumar Kushagra’s IPL Career

Kumar Kushagra’s IPL journey has been a mix of early hype, limited opportunities, and gradual rebuilding as he looks to establish himself at the highest level. He first grabbed headlines during the 2024 auction, where he became one of the biggest surprises of the event after being picked by the Delhi Capitals for a staggering INR 7.20 crore.

Limited to just four matches in his maiden season, he managed only a handful of runs and struggled to find rhythm, often batting lower down the order without enough time to settle.

The 2025 mega auction marked a reset in his IPL journey, as the Gujarat Titans secured him for INR 65 lakh, offering a fresh environment and a clearer development pathway.

Although he did not get a game during the 2025 season, the franchise showed faith in his long-term potential by retaining him for 2026, especially after his impressive domestic performances, including a title-winning Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign.
