About Adil Rashid

Name Adil Rashid
Birth 17 Feb 1988
Birth Place Bradford, West Yorkshire
Height 5 ft 8 in (173cm)
Nationality English
Bats right handed
Bowls right-arm leg-break

A wicket-taking leg-break bowler, Adil Rashid has established himself as an integral part of the English limited-overs set-up and came in handy during England’s triumphant World Cup campaign in 2019.

Recognising his contributions to the sport, Rashid was honoured with the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2023 Birthday Honours list.

Despite debuting in both white-ball formats back in 2009, Rashid's Test career failed to materialise. After a six-year hiatus, he made a successful return to international cricket and has since proven to be a valuable asset in the limited-overs formats.

Rashid played a crucial role in England's redemption after the 2015 World Cup debacle and was instrumental in England's triumph in the 50-over format.

Adil Rashid T20I Career

After an impressive all-round performance, scoring 72 runs for England Lions vs West Indies, Adil Rashid was called up to the national team for the 2009 T20 World Cup as an injury replacement for Andrew Flintoff.

He was a key part of England’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Notably, Adil Rashid's best T20I bowling figures so far came in the 2021 T20 World Cup, when he took 4/2 against the West Indies.

Known for his control, deceptive googlies, and the ability to break partnerships, Rashid has been a part of England’s latest T20 World Cup campaigns in 2024 and 2026.

Adil Rashid ODI Career

After impressing in the shortest format, Adil Rashid made his ODI debut for England on August 27, 2009, against Ireland in Belfast. He did not become a regular fixture in the side until 2015.

In the multi-format series against Pakistan in 2015, Rashid secured a spot in the one-day set-up after an exceptional Test debut. However, his return to the fifty-over format was dismal, as he failed to take wickets and went for runs.

Later, during England’s 2017 Champions Trophy preparations, Adil picked up a career best of 5–27 against Ireland.

Since then, Adil Rashid has been England’s premier white-ball leg-spinner with a distinguished ODI career. He was also a key member of the 2019 World Cup-winning side. On 21 June 2019, in the match against Sri Lanka, Rashid played in his 150th international match for England.

Adil Rashid Test Career

Unlike his debut in the white-ball formats, Adil Rashid’s Test debut for England came much later, against Pakistan on October 13, 2015, at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Notably, after a difficult first innings where he returned figures of 0–163, the worst by a Test debutant. However, he rebounded spectacularly in the second innings to finish with 5–64.

While Rashid secured his spot in England’s T20I and ODI squads with impressive performances, he failed to shine in the longest format, Test.

Notably, though he has not formally announced his retirement from Test cricket, he has effectively ruled himself out of the format to focus on white-ball cricket. He has not played a first-class match since his last Test in January 2019 and, despite not having formally retired, has confirmed he would not return to red-ball cricket.
