On June 12, the cricket world bid an emotional farewell to another legend as Kane Williamson announced his retirement from the game. After the announcement, the entire cricket world showered praise on his exceptional career, but among all, Virat Kohli’s message grabbed the attention.

Soon after New Zealand Cricket confirmed his retirement, tributes poured in from across the cricket world as stars came together to celebrate the Kiwi legend’s remarkable legacy.

Among all the heartfelt wishes, Virat Kohli’s emotional tribute grabbed attention as the former Indian captain penned down a warm wish. While congratulating Williamson for his extraordinary career, Virat Kohli also reflected on their years-long friendship. 

“From an opponent to a friend over the years. It’s been a pleasure watching you bat and compete against you over so many years, but more than that, I value our friendship and shared perspectives on the game and beyond. I continue to cherish every time we speak or meet,” Kohli wrote on his social media handle. 

“Wishing you nothing but the best always, brother. You’ve done your bit, you deserve to enjoy all of it now and put your feet up. Well done mate, life’s only just begun,” he added.

More than rivals, always friends

Since Kane Williamson made his debut for New Zealand, the nation has found a gem in him. Over the years, he established himself as one of the modern greats and earned his place in cricket’s iconic ‘Fab Four’ alongside Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, and Joe Root in the longest format.

Despite a stunning career, the ending unfolded in a way that no one even imagined. Wearing the New Zealand jersey one final time against England, the Kiwi great departed for a duck in the first innings and managed 18 in the second, bringing the curtain down on his illustrious career.

In 110 Tests, he scored 9515 runs along with 33 centuries. In 175 ODIs, he scored 7256 runs, donning the New Zealand jersey. Beyond his achievements with the bat, he transformed the team through his calm and inspiring leadership, making his retirement the end of a golden era in New Zealand cricket.
